ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Friday reduced the price of petrol by Rs4 per litre while keeping the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) unchanged for the week ending June 12, reflecting fluctuations in international oil markets.
According to the latest notification, the ex-depot price of petrol has been lowered from Rs381.78 to Rs377.79 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of HSD has been maintained at Rs380.78 per litre after adjustments in taxes and levies to offset the impact of changes in global fuel prices.
This marks the fourth consecutive weekly reduction in petrol prices, bringing the cumulative decrease to approximately Rs37 per litre. Last week alone, the government announced a significant reduction of Rs22 per litre in the prices of both petrol and diesel.
Despite recent relief, the government continues to collect substantial taxes and levies on petroleum products. Consumers are currently paying around Rs125 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol, including petroleum levy, customs duty, and climate support levy. The total tax burden on diesel stands at approximately Rs100 per litre.
The government is also charging about Rs21 per litre as petroleum levy on kerosene oil and around Rs16 per litre on light diesel oil.
High-speed diesel, widely used in freight transport, agriculture, and heavy industry, is considered one of the most inflation-sensitive fuels. Its price has declined considerably from the record high of Rs520.35 per litre recorded on April 10.
Petrol and diesel remain the government’s largest revenue-generating petroleum products, with combined monthly sales ranging between 700,000 and 800,000 tonnes, compared to kerosene’s monthly demand of around 10,000 tonnes.
